Answering the Call for CARPLS

Answer the call and help low-income families in Cook County with an immediate response to their every-day legal problems! CARPLS, an innovative legal aid service, is looking for hotline volunteers to provide advice, brief services, and referrals.

CARPLS’ next three-part hotline training begins Wednesday, March 23, from 4 to 8 p.m. (17 N. State St.). The first meeting involves substantive law training in landlord/tenant, domestic relations, and consumer debt.No experience is required and attendees will receive MCLE credit as well as dinner!

Senior Center Initiative

Help seniors prepare powers of attorney and living wills in a convenient workshop setting through the Senior Center Initiative, the signature program of the Center for Disability and Elder Law. These documents are a powerful tool in preventing potential abuse and financial exploitation, and give seniors a peace of mind.

Learn how you can help at an upcoming training (1.5 CLE) on February 9th from 4:30-6 pm at 79 W. Monroe. After the training, CDEL has several upcoming volunteer opportunities in February for you to provide these services to seniors.

DCFS Expungement Hearings

You can help wrongfully-accused parents and caretakers by attending a Family Defense Center (FDC) training on January 27th from 12 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Jones Day (77 W. Wacker).

Volunteers will learn how to represent clients in appeals of unsupported abuse or neglect indicated findings in the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services’ Administrative Hearings Unit. These cases afford attorneys the opportunity to conduct a full evidentiary mini-trial within approximately 90 days of a case opening, which can provide invaluable experience for firm associates and solo attorneys with the support of FDC attorneys.

LAF’s newest pro bono project, ADAPT (Advance Directives and Property Transfers) for Seniors, connects low-income seniors to lawyers who will help them establish powers of attorney, living wills, and transfer on death instruments. CBF Legal Aid Academy Partners with Kirkland & Ellis for Expert Deposition & Trial Skills Training

This summer, 40 legal aid attorneys and members of the CBF Justice Entrepreneurs Project participated in a three-day expert deposition and trial skills training program sponsored by Kirkland & Ellis LLP through the CBF Legal Aid Academy.  This is the second year in a row that Kirkland has partnered with the CBF Legal Aid Academy to provide free, high-quality training to attorneys in the legal aid community.

Eviction Defense Project

Looking for a summer pro bono project? Represent pro se tenants in eviction court through the Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing Eviction Defense Project. LCBH will be hosting a training for this project on Wednesday, July 22 from noon to 1:00 p.m. at the LCBH Office, 33 N. LaSalle St., Ste. 900.

This hour-long training will cover the basics of landlord-tenant law and eviction defense practice in Chicago. Attendees will learn about the various state and local laws governing landlord-tenant relationships and the ins and outs of the eviction courtroom. Attorneys of all experience levels are welcome and CLE will be provided.  Attendees are invited to bring their lunch.
