Honoring Careers of Dedication and Service

Eight attorneys recognized for outstanding work at the CBA and CBF Pro Bono and Public Service Awards Luncheon

Eight unsung heroes in the legal profession were recognized and celebrated for their extraordinary service to the community at the CBA and CBF’s 19th Annual Pro Bono and Public Service Awards Luncheon on July 17, 2017.

About 700 people attended this year’s event held at the Fairmont Hotel Chicago, co-chaired by David Bamlango, a partner at DLA Piper LLP (US), and Susan L. Lees, Executive Vice President and General Counsel for Allstate Insurance Company.

This year’s award recipients were recognized for their unflagging commitment to advancing access to justice and inspiring others to do likewise.

4th Annual Passport to Chicago a Success

On Friday, April 28, more than 200 guests came together for the 4th Annual Passport to Chicago in support of the CBF. At Kendall College, guests enjoyed dishes representing different Chicago neighborhoods, conceived and prepared by members of the Kendall College Competition Club. The creations were paired with a selection of local beers and regional wines, with special tastings provided by Chicago’s Midwest Wine Selections.

YLS Miami Nights—80’s Fun while Supporting the CBF

On February 24, the CBA Young Lawyers Section hosted Miami Nights, an event to benefit the CBF. Nearly 150 people from the legal community came together at the University Club for an 80’s-themed night of casino games, a poker tournament, fun, mingling, and charity. We’re extremely grateful to the YLS, and special thanks to YLS Public Service Manager Alex Memmen, the event committee, the volunteers, and YLS Director Jennifer Byrne. The YLS plays an important role in making the CBF’s work possible.

Miami Nights: A Casino Night featuring a Texas Hold’em Tournament – February 24

Shake off the cold weather and raise funds for the CBF while enjoying an exciting evening with your colleagues and friends at “Miami Nights!” The Young Lawyers Section invites you to The University Club on Friday, February 24 for an evening of table games, a Texas Hold’em Tournament, and South Beach inspired food and drink. Proceeds from the evening support the CBF’s work in Chicago’s legal community to make the justice system more fair and accessible for everyone. Attendees can choose from an all-access pass that includes the poker tournament or a standard casino pass (early bird rate through February 10).

Pro Bono Week 2016—Enthusiastic Crowds, Exciting New Programs

The CBA and CBF’s 12th Annual Pro Bono Week featured a number of successful programs and events that underscored this year’s theme, Caring, One Person at a Time. Rachel O’Konis Ruttenberg, Executive Director of the Family Defense Center, and Andrew Vail, Partner at Jenner & Block LLP, co-chaired the Week, which ran from October 24 to 28. We are delighted that hundreds of legal professionals in Chicago came together to celebrate the important pro bono work being done in our community and to encourage even more pro bono work in the year ahead.

Unsung Pro Bono and Public Service Heroes Honored

Nearly 700 people attended this year’s event held at the Fairmont Hotel Chicago, co-chaired by Kelly McNamara Corley, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary at Discover Financial Services, and Rebecca S. Eisner, Partner-in-Charge of Mayer Brown LLP’s Chicago office.

The award recipients represent a broad cross-section of Chicago’s legal community and share an unfaltering commitment to advancing access to justice and inspiring those around them to join the cause. This year’s recipients have fought to alleviate suffering for individuals with mental illness, young people involved in juvenile justice matters, underprivileged senior citizens, families impacted by childhood cancer, victims of consumer fraud, families facing wrongful evictions, and many other people in need in our community.

Lobbying and Touring at the State Capital

The CBA Young Lawyers Section and CBF are set to explore Springfield, Illinois on Tuesday, April 5 to Wednesday, April 6, 2016.

There will be opportunities to learn more about Illinois’ legislative process and how to lobby, as well as to meet with legislators and make new connections. Highlights include tours of the Capitol Building and Illinois Supreme Court; viewing of the General Assembly and Committees; and free time to explore Springfield (including the Lincoln Museum).

Thanks for Making this Year’s Fall Benefit a Big Success!

Thank you to everyone who made the 19th Annual Fall Benefit at The Field Museum a big success! Over 2,000 people from Chicago’s legal community came together on Saturday, November 7 to support and celebrate the CBF’s mission (alongside Sue!). The casual, family-friendly event featured tasty comfort food, unique kids’ activities, a sprawling silent auction, live music, open bar, complimentary parking, and access to the museum’s many popular exhibits, including the newest permanent exhibit, Cyrus Tang Hall of China, and special exhibit Mammoths and Mastodons: Titans of the Ice AgePhotos from the event show smiles all around.
