A new record of 146 law firms, corporate legal departments and other law-related organizations already are participating in the 2014 Investing in Justice Campaign, which raises awareness and much-needed funds for pro bono and legal aid services in the Chicago area.

Justice Entrepreneurs Project Featured at ABA Midyear Meeting

The CBF’s new incubator program, the Justice Entrepreneurs Project (JEP), was featured in many different ways at the February American Bar Association Midyear Meeting in Chicago. Terri Mascherin, chair of the JEP steering committee, offered her insights at a forum hosted by the ABA Legal Access Job Corps Task Force, which promotes innovative programs that connect new lawyers with underserved populations in need of legal services.

Recent Cy Pres Awards Support Continued Innovation in Access to Courts

Cy pres awards have made possible a number of successful court-based projects and other innovative initiatives over the past several years by providing the seed funding and enabling the CBF to provide ongoing support for these efforts. As one notable example, these awards have made it possible for the CBF to launch and help provide the ongoing funding for a growing network of advice desks in the state and federal courts.

On February 13th, members of the Chicago legal aid community gathered at the Chicago Bar Association for its monthly Legal Aid Committee meeting. But this was no regular meeting this was the annual forum to share and celebrate the successes of 2013 and learn about the important work their peers are doing.

Circuit Court of Cook County Mortgage Foreclosure Mediation Program Renewed for Three More Years

The Cook County Board recently approved a three-year extension for the Circuit Court of Cook County’s Mortgage Foreclosure Mediation Program. The CBF and other partner organizations worked with the Circuit Court to develop and launch this innovative program in the Spring of 2010 to help homeowners resolve their foreclosure cases in the most fair and effective manner possible.

The CBF would like to thank the Chicago Bar Association Young Lawyers Section (CBA YLS) for organizing and hosting another fun and successful Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament, the proceeds of which benefited the CBF. On Friday, January 31st, attorneys and other professionals from the Chicago legal community came together once again at the Standard Club for the YLS 8th annual Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament.

Last year, we set some ambitious goals at the CBF. Big projects, more grant funding, new solutions. We set our sights high because it’s all about reaching reaching beyond past successes, reaching to solve problems in a new way, reaching more people that need help. That wouldn’t get us very far though without a strong base of leadership and support behind our efforts. It’s because of your support of the CBF and the larger cause of equal access to justice that we’ve been able to achieve these ambitious goals over the last year.
