CBF Launches the Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Legacy of Justice Society

It was an inspiring kickoff for the Marovitz Legacy of Justice Society, the CBF’s new planned giving program named for the legendary Judge Abe. He dedicated his life to giving back to the community, and through his generous planned gift to the CBF, he planted the seeds for a life-changing scholarship and other innovative programs that continue to have an exponential impact in making the justice system fairer and better for everyone in our community today.

During the kickoff event generously hosted by Reed Smith LLP, CBF President Kenya Jenkins-Wright thanked attendees for their leadership generous support of the CBF and introduced our special guests for the launch of the new program.

Andy Marovitz, a Partner and General Counsel of Mayer Brown LLP, shared stories of his uncle, Judge Marovitz, and the legacy he built through his support of the CBF and his investment in promising law students deeply committed to public interest law. Andy shared that Judge Abe would be moved to have the Legacy of Justice Society named in his honor, and he recognized Dennericka Brooks, Director of Legal Aid Chicago’s Housing Practice Group, as the first recipient of the Marovitz Scholarship in 2004.

Dennericka then shared how the Marovitz Scholarship and the Anderson Fellowship through the CBF helped set the path for her to dedicate her career to public interest law and to go on to a leadership role in legal aid and serve thousands of Chicagoans facing eviction and other housing issues throughout her career.

Caroline Manley, Executive Director of the Center for Disability & Elder Law and a recipient earlier in her career of an Equal Justice Works Fellowship and a Sun-Times fellowship through the CBF, shared how the CBF helped start her career and now remains a powerful source of community and support for her and others in legal aid serving the Chicago area.
