2012 – Elizabeth P. Lewis

Elizabeth LewisFrom the time she entered law school, Elizabeth P. Lewis demonstrated her dedication to the ideals of the legal profession and her commitment to pro bono and community service. Her extensive work on high-conflict custody and guardianship cases at Loyola’s Civitas Child Law Clinic that began after her first year of law school is just one of many examples of her exemplary commitment as a law student. Since graduating from law school in 2006, Elizabeth has retained that inspiring commitment to pro bono and public service as she has developed her tax law practice at McDermott, Will & Emery. She continues to engage in a broad range of pro bono service, with a particular dedication to advocacy on behalf of children and families.

As a first-year associate at McDermott, Elizabeth immediately took a leadership role on the firm’s pro bono team as the liaison and coordinator in Chicago for McDermott’s Kids First Initiative. In this role, she has been instrumental in growing a successful family law and children’s rights pro bono practice at McDermott. In addition, Elizabeth has dedicated over 1,200 hours representing at-risk children and families and nonprofit organizations working in low-income communities. Her pro bono work has included special education, school discipline, adoption, custody, guardianship, child abuse and neglect, inheritance rights, tax, and corporate governance. She has represented pro bono clients in administrative hearings, full trials, complex negotiations and appeals. Her results are impressive, from individual successes to precedent-setting victories. In all of this work, one of her nominators aptly notes that “the quality and effectiveness of her advocacy has been outstanding on every level, reflecting exceptional degrees of experience, insight and judgment.”

Elizabeth is also recognized as a leader in the community, serving on boards and in other leadership roles for several organizations. She is admired and respected as an outstanding lawyer, a compassionate advocate and a dedicated leader.
