2018 – Anna M. Lozoya

Anna Lozoya, a Risk Manager at Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, stands out for her unique, interdisciplinary commitment to helping others. As a lawyer and a nurse, she uses her diverse skill set and experience to ensure that veterans receive optimal and holistic medical care.

As an attorney, Anna has been active in the legal community and committed to giving back to Chicago from the start of her career. She is a member of the Puerto Rican Bar Association (PBRA) of Illinois, where she chaired the scholarship committee that raised and distributed over $20,000 in scholarships to Latino law students in Chicago. She leverages her legal expertise by organizing PRBA’s Expungement Day, which helps African-American and Latino community members expunge and seal their criminal records without charge. Anna also assists in collecting clothes, toys, and donations for low-income students during Christmas as a program coordinator for the PRBA’s annual Adopt-a-Family program.

Anna donates her skills as a nurse to assist those who do not have access to health care. In April, she volunteered with the Illinois State Bar Association during their annual Ask-a-Lawyer Day to answer questions regarding personal injury and medical malpractice matters, an excellent example of how she integrates her knowledge as a nurse and attorney to serve others. In addition to her volunteerism and advocacy, Anna serves as the only Latina and nurse on the Illinois State Bar Association’s Health Care Section Council, showing the strength of her dedication to speaking on behalf of underrepresented populations.

As a colleague states, “Anna lives the ideals of love, honor, and truth daily as an attorney in Chicago and as a pillar in the community.” Her profound passion to help serve the most vulnerable lies in advocating for those that cannot advocate for themselves, increasing access to justice and making our community a better place for all.
